Don't forget to apply for a free European Health Insurance Card. This gives you free or discounted medical treatment in any EU country. It isn't a substitute for travel insurance though as cover can be limited.

Most travel insurance policies won't cover you if your airline goes bust. However, if your ticket costs over £100 and you've paid for it by credit card you may be covered under section 75 of the consumer credit act. This states that the card issuer is equally liable if something goes wrong.
