Great - he's proposed and you've said yes - now what?

Getting started on your wedding planning can be daunting - with so much to do it's hard to know where to start. Here's a step by step guide.

Start to imagine your wedding

Have you always dreamt of a big wedding or do you both want a small, intimate event? Make sure you agree on your basic vision for the day. Would you want a church ceremony or civil? Are you both traditional or would you want to be a bit different? Once you've agreed on the fundamentals you can start to get down to the details.

Time of year

Now's the time to decide on whether you want to be a winter bride or get married in summer. Then decide on which year. Once you've done this you'll have a rough date for your wedding.

Budget

The next thing to do is to work out how much you want to spend. Have you got savings? Will parents be contributing? How much can you save in the meantime? You might want to look at an average wedding breakdown to get an idea of what you can get for your money so you can decide how far you want to stretch yourselves.

Venue and numbers

Now you need to decide either on a guest list of must haves, or on your dream venue. You can do this in either order depending on which seems more logical for your own situation.

Once these are both set and the venue for reception and ceremony are booked you can start moving onto the other areas. See our timeline for a suggested timescale by which you should be booking things. If you have less than our suggested year, don't worry, just move things forward a little!
